# Ultrasonic vs Float vs Pressure Water Tank Sensors

TownEve Editorial Team · September 28, 2026

A housing society choosing water-tank monitoring may encounter several sensor technologies. The names sound interchangeable, but they do not all measure the same way or serve the same purpose.

An ultrasonic sensor can measure the distance to a water surface without touching it. A float device responds to the movement of a floating element. A hydrostatic pressure sensor infers liquid depth from pressure at a known point. Each approach has different installation requirements and failure considerations. For site implementation considerations, see the [contactless water-tank sensor installation guide](https://www.towneve.com/resources/contactless-water-tank-sensor-installation).

The useful question is not which technology wins in every situation. It is which sensing method fits the tank, the information required and the property's maintenance process.

Start with the measurement requirement

Does the society need a low-level switch, a continuous level reading, a local alarm or remote historical monitoring?

A simple float switch may be appropriate when the only required signal is that a level has crossed a particular point. A continuous level sensor is more appropriate when operators need to observe the rise and fall of a tank over time.

Even within one technology, devices differ. A float switch is not the same product as a continuous float-based level transmitter. An ultrasonic sensor connected to a local indicator is not automatically a cloud monitoring system.

Define the desired information and operating workflow before comparing hardware prices.

How contactless ultrasonic sensing works

A typical top-mounted ultrasonic level sensor sends an acoustic pulse toward the water surface and measures the time taken for the reflected signal to return. With the correct configuration, the measured distance can be converted into a water level.

The sensor is mounted above the water rather than immersed in it. That separation can be useful when the owner wants to avoid putting the sensing element in the stored water.

The measurement still depends on the tank environment. Mounting position, obstructions, surface conditions, the sensor's specified operating range and the acoustic path can affect suitability. A contactless design is not a promise that every tank can be measured accurately without a site assessment.

TownEve currently uses contactless ultrasonic sensing for suitable overhead and underground tanks.

How float devices work

A float follows the liquid surface. Depending on its design, it may actuate a switch at a particular level or contribute to a continuous level measurement.

A basic float switch is often used as a local point-level input. It can indicate that a threshold has been reached, but it does not by itself produce a detailed historical chart of every level between two switch positions.

A continuous float-based transmitter is a different category and should be compared with other continuous sensors on its actual specification.

Float mechanisms need an appropriate physical arrangement inside the tank. Their suitability depends on available movement, mounting, the liquid and the maintenance environment. A float should not be dismissed as universally unsuitable, nor should its presence be treated as proof of remote monitoring.

How hydrostatic pressure sensing works

A hydrostatic pressure sensor measures pressure related to the liquid column above the measurement point. With appropriate assumptions and calibration, that pressure can be converted into an estimated depth.

The measurement depends on factors including liquid density, installation reference and the particular sensor design. Changes in liquid properties or incorrect configuration can affect the level interpretation.

Some pressure-sensing installations place a sensing element in contact with the liquid; others use a different physical arrangement. The exact design matters, so the buyer should inspect the proposed equipment rather than treating all pressure sensors as identical.

Pressure sensing can be a viable option where its installation and maintenance requirements fit the site.

What contactless sensing enables

Contactless describes the sensing arrangement, not the absence of maintenance. A top-mounted ultrasonic device still needs secure mounting, power, appropriate protection and a clear measurement path.

Contactless level sensing measures the storage condition without placing the sensing element in the water. Water-quality assessment is a separate discipline requiring the appropriate potability, microbiological or treatment-compliance methods.

For tanks with muddy or unfiltered water, keeping the sensing element out of the liquid may be a relevant design preference. Actual performance still needs evaluation against the sensor's specifications and site conditions.

The right comparison is therefore the full installed solution, not one marketing adjective.

Installation considerations

For ultrasonic sensing, check whether the tank has a suitable top mounting location and a measurement path consistent with the device specification. Confirm the reference from which level will be calculated.

For a float-based device, check the required internal space, mechanical movement and maintenance access. For pressure sensing, check the pressure reference, liquid compatibility, cable or tubing arrangement where applicable, and calibration needs.

Across all technologies, identify safe installation access, power, cable routing and any necessary electrical work. A sensor choice that looks inexpensive on a product page may involve additional site work.

Installation should follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions and the property's approved safety procedures.

Measurement versus monitoring

A sensor reading becomes operationally useful only when it reaches the people who need it.

Ask whether the proposal includes a local display, remote dashboard, historical records, configured alerts and a way to recognize stale data. These capabilities depend on the complete system, not simply on whether the sensing element is ultrasonic, float-based or pressure-based.

TownEve's current offering combines suitable contactless tank sensors with current and historical level visibility, configured email alerts, role-based access and telemetry-freshness monitoring.

Its multi-tower architecture uses tower-level modules communicating by RF with one society-level master, which uploads readings to the application backend. Those communication features are separate from the underlying measurement principle.

Compare the maintenance burden honestly

Every installed technology has inspection and support needs. The relevant questions include access to the device, exposure to the liquid, mechanical components where present, calibration or configuration checks and the ease of independently verifying a questionable reading.

Do not assume that a contactless sensor never needs cleaning or inspection. Do not assume that an immersed sensor necessarily fails in every tank. Site conditions, equipment quality and the maintenance process determine the practical burden.

Ask the vendor for the proposed model's documentation, the site-specific installation method, warranty scope and post-installation support arrangement.

Consider the kind of failure you need to recognize

A level reading can become implausible. It can remain unchanged for a genuine operating reason, or it can stop updating because a communication path failed.

The system should help users distinguish a fresh reading from a last-known value. If current data is unavailable, the society needs an independent verification procedure for urgent conditions.

A high-level threshold does not by itself prove physical overflow. A falling level does not establish the electrical state of a pump. Those limitations apply to the interpretation of level data, regardless of the sensing principle.

TownEve can alert the responsible team when input stops arriving for a configured period. The cause still requires investigation.

Use a site-specific selection checklist

Begin with the actual tank: overhead or underground, geometry, access, liquid type, expected level range and mounting constraints.

Next define the information required: one or more point thresholds, continuous level, estimated stored volume, historical trends, remote access or alerts.

Then evaluate the proposed complete system: sensing element, installation, power, communications, dashboard, user access, support and the procedure for verifying readings.

Finally, test the chosen solution under relevant operating conditions. A pilot on one tank may demonstrate that installation, but it does not establish suitability for every other tank or tower.

Where TownEve fits

TownEve's current sensing approach is contactless ultrasonic measurement for suitable overhead and underground tanks. It is designed to give authorized users a historical view of monitored levels and configured email alerts without placing the ultrasonic sensing element in the water.

The suitability of a particular tank, communication path and installation should be confirmed through site assessment and commissioning. The choice should be based on the property's requirements, not a claim that one sensor technology is universally superior.

FAQ

Is an ultrasonic sensor always more accurate than a float or pressure sensor?

No universal accuracy ranking is appropriate. Performance depends on the specific device, configuration, installation and operating conditions.

Can a float switch show the exact tank level?

A basic point-level float switch indicates a threshold state. Continuous float-based transmitters are different devices and may provide a varying level signal.

Does a pressure sensor measure water depth directly?

It measures pressure, from which depth can be inferred with appropriate configuration and assumptions.

Does a contactless sensor touch the water?

A top-mounted contactless ultrasonic sensing element is positioned above the water surface. Other installed components and tank conditions still require assessment.

Can any of these sensors automatically control a pump?

A level sensor can also become an input to a separately engineered control layer. TownEve is developing and testing remote pump operation as that broader operational layer, with site-specific safety engineering and commissioning.

Can tank-level monitoring measure household consumption?

Tank-level change reflects net storage movement. Separate consumption measurement requires an appropriate method, especially when inflow and outflow occur together.

Does a level sensor check water quality?

No. Level measurement is not a substitute for water-quality testing.
